Silken Wonders by Kinga Foldi

Silken Wonders by Kinga Foldi Curated by Pınar Bodehun Istanbul, (April- September 2024) Amid the rolling hills of Tuscany at the La Macina de San Cresci Art Residency, a creative dialogue began between artist Kinga Foldi and curator Pinar Goodstone. Captivated by the tactile poetry of Foldi’s silk sculptures, Goodstone initiated what would become a long-distance collaboration, culminating in Foldi’s first exhibition in Istanbul—a city historically rooted in the Silk Road, where East and West converge. Trained as a woven textile designer at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Foldi blends traditional craft with contemporary sculpture. Her technique—pin-tuck, originally used to embellish clothing—is transformed into a medium of sculptural expression. Through precise folding and stitching, she conjures delicate garlic bulbs, mushrooms, and floral forms, channeling nature’s shapes, scents, and textures into silk. Each piece emerges as a meditative ode to nature—organic, intricate, and quietly powerful. Foldi’s brooches add a symbolic dimension to her sculptural language. Red poppies stand as global emblems of remembrance and hope—particularly resonant today in Turkey, as the nation breathes a collective sigh of optimism following recent elections. Ginkgo leaves speak of healing, resilience, and longevity, while dragons—rendered in turquoise and gold—evoke ancient wisdom, hidden knowledge, and supernatural strength. These works are not just accessories; they are talismans born from craft, culture, and spirit. “Silken Wonders” is more than an exhibition—it is an invitation to slow down, to reconnect with the earth’s rhythm, and to find beauty in intricacy. In Foldi’s hands, silk becomes not just a fabric, but a storyteller of nature, memory, and renewal.
